day 10: ft. worth, tx-rio rancho, nm 6.10.12
we packed up the car and went to nana’s for breakfast. doug made us all breakfast. then we had to say our goodbyes. we got on the road at about 8a. the drive to rio rancho is about 10 and a 1/2 hours and we weren’t sure if we were going to do the drive all in one day. we got to amarillo, tx, the half way point, at about 12:30. we were making such good time that we decided to just see how far we could get. grant was doing good for the first leg. he had yogurt, colored, played with his cars, and watched how to train your dragon. he was napping as we went through amarillo, so we couldn’t stop at the big texan, home of the 72 oz steak. kind of a bummer. oh well, we kept driving.
we crossed the tx-nm border not too long after amarillo. we went on the the old route 66 and drove through the town of tucumcari, nm. it was a major thoroughfare back during the route 66 hey day. it was pretty much run down and desolate, but it was kinda neat to see. i’ll bet it was really cool back then.
we made it to rio rancho at 6p. we made great time. karen and brian made burgers and we had dinner, made a fire, and did some sparklers. and now bedtime.
