the x-files

season 2, episode 14, “die hand die verletzt”

aired: 1.27.95

if you watch this episode in a campy horror movie frame of mind, it is a fun wacky ride. if you watch it from a more somber point of view, it’s morbid and depressing as hell. either way it’s a decent episode with some very cool imagery. the evil PTA that practice an occult religion accidentally summon up a devil like creature that wreaks havoc on the youth of the town. the town doesn’t seem to be an ordinary town at all, or is it the presence of the serpent being that is disguised as the substitute teacher? frogs fall from the sky and the water drains counter clockwise. this is mulder’s kind of place. very spooky. things get spookier when a girl is dissecting a piglet in science class and the heart starts beating and it turns to look at her. you can see that as totally fucked up cool or just totally fucked up. her scream is bone chilling. that craziness is followed up by a gruesome story told by the girl to mulder and scully. at this point we don’t know enough about the evil PTA to discount her story. and then like the poor girl hasn’t been through enough the psycho snake teacher does some voodoo to force the girl to slit her own wrists (and she was just trying to make up the final!).  i mean, you have to look at it like a crazy horror movie or else it’s just down right wrong.

there are some great moments with mulder and scully who kind of take a backseat to this horror show. mulder’s reaction, or non-reaction actually, when it rains frogs is so mulder. of course that’s not going to phase him. he lives for this stuff. and he just loves that scully is bearing witness to it. “mulder, toads just fell from the sky.” “guess their parachutes didn’t open.” mulder gets one of the parents to confess to the cult activity, “did you really think you could call up the devil and ask him to behave?” mulder sees exactly what is going on. but, that doesn’t help him when the other members of the PTA attack him and scully and are about to kill them. their savior comes in the form of the devil. i’m not sure why the snake teacher saved them. was she just playing with the idiots that summoned her? teaching them a lesson? it’s not quite clear and then she peaces out, leaving a cute message on the blackboard, “goodbye, it’s been nice working with you.” philes know that it really was a message from writers james wong and glen morgan, who penned this episode as their last. does it work for the story? i guess it can because both the motives of the cult and the evil teacher were so unclear throughout. why not leave an ambiguous message after inexplicably saving the agents’ lives.

rating: 3.5
