season 3, episode 15, “piper maru”
this two-parter along with “apocrypha” continues the mythology where “paper clip” left off. the other mythology duo from this season “nisei/731” is almost its own independent mythology from this expansive thread. “nisei” and “731” do bring up “paper clip” but more as a parallel than a notch in the story arc. “piper maru” is our introduction to the black oil. this is a great chapter in the overall mythology of the show, but it’s where the myth-centric episodes started to lose their luster for me.
i’m glad they focus on melissa’s death. it’s something that needed to be addressed. and i like skinner’s involvement. scully handles her mourning of her sister by investigating and they add in bits of her being nostalgic which i thought was a nice touch. the black oil is a really cool, would you say, villain? the effects they do with it are impressive. krycek returns and nobody seems too surprised. and, oh yeah, the digital tape. i forgot about that. despite the neat black oil effects, the handling of melissa’s death, and the return of krycek, this episode is more of a device to further the mytharc plots.
drop dead red has to be referring to scully, right?
yeah, scully has a good point about the ridiculousness of them making melissa’s case inactive. she has a right to be pissed.
if you’re doing the drinking game. scully says, “i’m a medical doctor.” drink!
seeing somebody’s eyes turn black like that would fuck me up big time.
i really like gauthier’s san francisco apartment.
the man just came to not knowing how he got to his apartment, his wife is missing, and he’s covered in black oil, and mulder wants him to remain calm.
jeraldine: “sorry, i don’t type.” kind of a sexist assumption there, eh, mulder?
how much was that flight last minute flight to hong kong?
love skinner standing up to the well-dressed toughs.
did you know? behind the scenes facts:
piper maru is named after gillian anderson’s daughter.
michael buble has an uncredited role in the flashback.
scully is so not in the mood for x-files until mulder exhibits so much passion for the lead he has on a case. it brings her out of her melancholy state a bit. she laughs. “i’m just constantly amazed by you […] you’re in the basement because they’re afraid of you, of your relentlessness, and because they know that they could drop you in the middle of the desert and tell you the truth is out there, and you’d ask them for a shovel.” he responds, “is that what you think of me, scully?” “well maybe not a shovel. maybe a backhoe.”
s: “it’s a north american P-51 mustang.” m: “i just got very turned on.” you know scully is proud of that on the inside.
johansen: “the dead speak to us. conscience, it’s just the voices of the dead trying to save us from our own damnation.”
